Sustainability donation being introduced in 2025

Starting 1 January 2025, a modest, localised event fee will be introduced. This will be used solely to ensure a sustainable model to pay for the underlying infrastructure that powers the DevOpsDays global community. Both the global organisation and local events themselves will continue to be volunteer-run, and none of these funds will be used to remunerate volunteers at any level.

In 2024, the DevOps community celebrates a significant milestone: the 15th anniversary of DevOpsDays. This event, which has grown into a global phenomenon, is returning to its roots in Antwerp, Belgium, where the original idea was conceived by Patrick Debois and Kris Buytaert. The conference began as a humble gathering in Ghent, the site of the first event, but it quickly grew into a worldwide movement, spreading the principles of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement in IT and software development practices to dozens of cities across the globe. Mark your calendars for September 4 and 5, 2024, as these dates promise to be a landmark occasion in the DevOps community. For this celebration we are heading back to the exact venue in the Antwerp Zoo, right next to the fantastic Antwerp Central train station , where Patrick and Kris got the idea, we are really going back to the roots of DevOps.

DevOpsDays events have been running for nearly 15 years now (plug: come to the anniversary event in Antwerp!), but the ecosystem in which events are run has changed. The cost of living has increased in many countries, the ability to travel has been severely reduced, and there is less financial ability by many historically generous sponsor companies.

As one of the co-chairs of the global core team, I wanted to take this opportunity to highlight a new section we’ve added to the Organizing Guide: Good, Better, Best Budget.

Like all events and event series globally, Devopsdays needed to adjust their plans in 2020/2021 - and depending on region well into 2022 as well. While many chapters decided to cancel their events, some organizers instead opted to go virtual, or: hybrid when regulations in their area loosened.

What was their experience with these formats, and what parts did organizers carry over to their in-person events in 2022? In fact, did they “go back”?

Registration for the event is open now. The ticket is a free add-on to registration for Devopsdays Chicago, taking place August 9 - 10.

This August, the day before Devopsdays Chicago, organizers from all over the globe will come together to exchange best practices and connect.

To celebrate 10 years of Devopsdays, in 2019, co-located with Devopsdays Ghent in Belgium, the first Organizers Summit took place. Devopsdays is a global event series, and there’s heaps we can learn from eachother. The pandemic of course meant we couldn’t really get together sooner, and we’re hoping to see many of you in Chicago, this August 8.

“Is devopsdays still relevant?” Daniel Paulus asked his fellow organizers at our retrospective for devopsdays Amsterdam 2022. Standing in a circle surrounded by a peaceful field and a forest settling into fall, each of us had a chance to express our thoughts while the other six listened.

It’s a question that I am sure has been asked by organizers in other cities and by would-be organizers as they read the devopsdays guide. And the root term, DevOps, has been the subject of similar discussions. But that’s another blog post for another day!

Looking Back; Looking Forward

In January 2015, Bridget Kromhout stepped up as the leader of the devopsdays core team, invited by founder Patrick Debois to replace him after he led devopsdays from 2009-2014. Bridget had organized devopsdays Minneapolis in July 2014, and was now ready to help streamline and improve processes to help other cities get started.

Over the next five years, Bridget scaled the organizing team up, adding core team members who could onboard and mentor new city teams, and seeking out core team members from communities and regions not previously represented. She added organizer chat tooling, creating connections among a community of organizers that enhanced the existing connections between the core team and each local city team. She introduced structure to allow core organizers to participate as active, advisory, or emeritus. She worked with Matt Stratton to re-implement the website and add new tooling which made easier for many people to update the site. And she wrote, edited, and expanded guidelines for cities running their first devopsdays event. Clear documentation helps open source projects grow, and this community effort is no different, doubling the number of cities year over year.

Escolhemos a Universidade Federal da Bahia, pois lá estão diversos grupos de professores e alunos que se beneficiariam profundamente com um evento dentro das suas instalações, e quem ainda não conhece a UFBA, teria o prazer de ver sua enorme praça verde, poderia descobrir uma Biblioteca imensa, poderia descobrir que lá está o ponto de presença de Rede Nacional de Pesquisa (RNP) que conecta a maioria dos órgãos federais e locais através da sua rede remessa.

10 years of devopsdays

It’s hard to believe but it is almost 10 years ago since #devopsdays happened for the first time in Gent. Back then there were almost 70 of us talking about topics that were of interest to both Operations and Development, we were exchanging our ideas and experiences `on how we were improving the quality of software delivery.

Our ideas got started on the crossroads of Open Source, Agile and early Cloud Adoption. but we decided on not having a manifesto. 10 years later and the word “devops” is all over our industry.

DevOpsDays Kansas City 2017 was held at the Uptown Theater at 3700 Broadway, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Uptown Theater was home to performances by Sting, Jason Bonham, Henry Rollins, Cyndi Lauper, Garbage, Sarah Silverman, Lyle Lovett, Dwight Yoakum, Ben Folds, Third Eye Blind, Melissa Etheridge, OK GO, Rusted Root, Elvis Costello, Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn and many others over the last few years. So it was a great experience for our speakers to take this stage.

Introduction

This is a report with data stats and lessons learned about DevOpsDays Sao Paulo 2018, held on 06 and 07 of June at Hotel Century Flat.

Goal

Most events with DevOps subject in Brazil have more like Ops profile, others events that are trying to reach “DevOps public” add a track about that. But, often talks have subject around tools. We would like to discuss to invoke subjects beyond Infrastructure as Code and/or Continuous Delivery.

As we finish our 4th of July celebrations in Minnesota, many folks are looking at a summer packed full of outdoor activities and of course DevOpsDays Minneapolis! The approach of this year’s conference makes us reflect on last year’s event. As organizers of this event, we continue to be immensely proud of the high-quality content in combination with the great speakers we are able to bring to the stage in this community.

Singapore 2017 in review

The third DevOpsDays in Singapore was held at Microsoft Operations Offices on October 25th and 26th 2017 with participation of more than 200 attendees.

Speakers came from Europe, USA and Asia and included viewpoints ranging from process automation to software and system engineering.

The conference is a mixture of organised formal presentations in the morning and informal self-organising open spaces in the afternoon.

Attendees suggested topics via pigeonhole and voted throughout the day on the website which worked well.

Cuba 2017 in review

Last October, 23-27 2017 we celebrated at Melia Marina Varadero the second annual event of DevOpsDays Cuba with participation of more than 120 delegates. The event was well received and of great interest to different educational institutions such as: Informatics Science University (UCI), Central University (UCLV) and others Universities from different regions of the country. In addition, the public sector was represented by professionals of companies related to Software Industry and Telecommunications services such as: DESOFT, DATYS, GEOCUBA, ETECSA, XETID, etc. As a great improvement, this year the event was well received by IT professionals of the young private sector in Cuba (TCP).

O DevOpsDays Brasília aconteceu em área central da Capital Federal em 07 e 08 de novembro de 2017. Este foi o segundo ano consecutivo que realizamos o DevOpsDays aqui pelo planalto central - Centro Oeste brasileiro.

O evento foi realizado no Centro de Convenções do Hotel Grand Mercure - além de ser um local bonito e elegante, está muito bem localizado possuindo inúmeras facilidades em seu entorno como bancos, shoppings, restaurantes e belas atrações turísticas (exemplo: Torre de TV, feira de artesanato, Clube do Choro, Planetário de Brasília, Centro Cultural Funarte, Estádio Nacional Mané Garrinha).

Auckland 2017 in Review

The conference

The DevOpsDays conference was held in Auckland on the 3rd and 4th October 2017. This was the third DevOpsDays conference in New Zealand after the first one in Auckland (2013) and the second in Wellington last year.

The venue was the beautiful and spacious Ellerslie Event Centre in Auckland. Around 230 DevOps enthusiasts attended the conference - coming from a wide spectrum of backgrounds viz. product, banking, consulting and govt. sectors both in New Zealand and abroad.

DevOpsDays Seattle 2017 was held at McCaw Hall on April 26th and 27th. Around 400 participants saw a mix of internationally known and local speakers talking about their challenges and successes.

After the end of the event, we sent around a survey. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

Some things we think went well:

The speakers all did a great job. You can watch a recording of each session by clicking on the title on our program page.
Most people said they liked the balance between chosen sessions and open spaces

On October 20th and 21st, 2016, 208 software practioners met in a packed house in Kansas City Missouri at Musical Theater Heritage to discuss DevOps at DevOpsDays KC.

The conference was a mixture of presentations and open spaces. Speakers came from both coasts and included viewpoints ranging from a high school student to a PhD, from seasoned executives to software and system engineers, from first time presenters to presenters with over 60 conferences speaking slots. Open spaces were held in the afternoon. This is where the conference takes a turn from organized formal content to informal self-organizing content. Attendees suggested topics and voted throughout the day. They then voted with their feet throughout the afternoon by moving from the 5 simultaneous discussions.

DevOpsDays Chicago took place on August 30th & 31st at Summit West in beautiful downtown Chicago. A sold-out, diverse crowd gathered for keynotes, presentations, lightning talks, and open spaces to learn, discuss, and promote all things DevOps.

Day One

The Presentations

Leading off the presentations was a keynote by Adam Jacob, who discussed The Future of Automation. Topics such as the idea of “ubuntu” (not the Linux distro!), context, and the importance of ease over simplicity were markedly well-received by the audience. “When you suffer, I suffer. When you thrive, I thrive.”

Minneapolis 2016 in review

The third devopsdays Minneapolis, held July 20-21 2016 at the Hilton Minneapolis, was a balancing act between explosive growth and continuing what worked from 2014 and 2015. We’re delighted to let you know that the survey results seem to indicate that participants liked it!

We had about 700 people attend the event. (For comparison, 2015 had about 350 and 2014 had about 250.) 133 people filled out the post-event survey. (30.8% were also at devopsdays MSP 2015 and 15.8% at devopsdays MSP 2014.) Every year we have between 8% and 11% of registered attendees not show up. This year the attrition was closer to 8%, probably because we offered full refunds until the final weekend before the event; the official registration total was 763 people. 88.6% of survey respondents said they live and/or work in the greater Twin Cities area.

Diversity and inclusion are important to the organizers, and many attendees said that was their favorite thing about the conference (in person, on Twitter, and in the survey). Of those who replied to the survey, 29% considered themselves to be members of a group under-represented in technology. We estimate that about 18.4% of those attending the conference were women. As for the demographics of our speakers, we featured 58.8% women speakers with 62.5% women presenting the 30-minute sessions; 35.3% of all speakers were people of color with 25% of the 30-minute sessions presented by people of color. We’re thrilled at what great talks everyone gave, and since Joe Laha turned the videos around quickly, you can watch them and see for yourself!

The explosion of devopsdays events in recent years is exciting for everyone in the community. Some of us have been in this space since before the first event in Ghent, while others are joining with the newest events coming online in 2015. In the last year we’ve added new global core organizers, seen the originator of devopsdays (Patrick Debois) move into an advisory role, and been thrilled by rapid expansion in the numbers and locations of events.

For the upcoming DevOpsDays in Mountain View we’re looking to create t-shirts based off of your design. We’re going to run a design submission period, followed by a brief rating period. The design with the most votes will get printed on the back of the Devopsdays 2011 - Mountain View event shirt. How cool is that?

In order to make the voting period safe, we’ll be collecting submissions up to Midnight PDT on May 15th. Once we have all submissions we’ll create the voting apparatus at DevOpsDays.org - where interested people can vote on their favorite design. We will close the design voting period out at Midnight PDT on May 31st - and give the design to our printer.

Another year, another devopsdays! This time in the marvelous city of Boston.

On 7 and 8 March 2011, we are organizing a new devopsdays. It will be a two event with conference talks in the morning and openspaces in the afternoon.

It is kindly hosted by the Microsoft NERD Center

You can contribute in one of the following ways:

Propose a session for the conference talks: it will be a 45 minute session where you can talk about the next big things happening in devops land, you’re reflections on devops (good and bad), the experiences you want to share. For a detailed description see our call for presentations
Propose a lightning talk: If you have a strong devops related message that you really want to share with the DevOps world, we encourage you to send us a proposal for an Ignite presentation. These are 5 minute talks with 20 slides which auto-advance. If you aren’t familiar with the format, google is your friend (and I won’t question your geek cred… cough maybe you’ve just been busy… go check some out, we’ll still be here when you get back. ) The only rule is don’t give a straight pitch. That’s not even a rule we’ll enforce, everyone will just think you are lame… that is punishment enough.
Register and show up: One of the success factor of previous devopsdays is the openspace-format: it fosters the sharing of ideas and insights in good old fashion, non-technical way by just talking to each other. Last time it even got people who would normally never talk, into the conversation. This doesn’t require any effort besides registering and showing up at the event.
Sponsor the event: We really like to keep the devopsdays a low budget maximum pleasure thing. Therefore we actively seek sponsors to make this happen. In return we hope to make it valuable for you to sponsor.

Since then we have had successful conference in both Australia and the United States. Now we are back home in Europe.

Velocity

If you've heard me talk about Agile Infrastucture, or read my personal blog, you might have noticed that I frequently make references to Velocity. When we started planning DevOpsDays US, there was consensus from the beginning to backdraft Velocity.

I have a hard time saying ‘DevOps’ was born at any one time or any one place, as doing so ignores a large body of individual and organizational work, knowledge and experience, but Velocity has to be considered seminal in the course of the formation and articulation of DevOps ideas and ideals.

The Panel Experiment and Ignite DevOps

When we first started organizing DevOpsDays for the US, we all had slightly different visions about what we wanted to see and what we wanted to participate in.

On one hand, some of us really wanted to use Open Space Technology as the basis for some if not all of the program, while some of us really wanted to have presentations.
We all wanted to have a ‘community’ event, but we also wanted to leverage the expertise in that community. We came to realize that on almost any topic, no matter who was presenting, there would often be as much or more expertise in the audience as there could be on the stage. Those experts might have different opinions. We also planned from the beginning to do DevOpsDays right after the Velocity Conference and thought some people might be ‘presentationed’ out. The best idea we came up with is an experiment.
We’re going to have a conference that is all panels and ignite talks. We posted the themes for the panels and we’ll soon have the participants and short bios up as well. Audience participation will definitely be encouraged and facilitated as much as possible, but if you believe you or someone you know is ‘just perfect’ for one of those panels drops us a line and make a case.
If you have a strong devops related message that you really want to share with the DevOps world, we encourage you to send us a proposal for an Ignite presentation. These are 5 minute talks with 20 slides which auto-advance. If you aren’t familiar with the format, google is your friend (and I won’t question your geek cred… cough maybe you’ve just been busy… go check some out, we’ll still be here when you get back. ) Ignite is a fun way to introduce people to ideas and leave them wanting more.
We have 10 slots scheduled right now and half of those are filled, so you still have a good chance to share your ideas. Tell us about tools, processes, tips, tricks, war stories, whatever… make us laugh, make us cry, show us how to be more awesome…
