Open Source Is Not Free: Why Enterprises Must Help Build the Software They Depend On

Modern enterprises rely heavily on open source, yet most organizations remain consumers rather than contributors. This talk uses the story of k8gb, a CNCF project for Kubernetes-native global traffic management, to discuss the responsibility large organizations have in sustaining the open source ecosystem they depend upon. Drawing on real enterprise experience, we’ll explore how corporations can contribute beyond code: validating production use cases, supporting maintainers, influencing roadmaps, funding sustainability, and providing operational feedback that helps projects mature. The session challenges the idea that open source is simply free software and argues that active participation is essential for innovation, resilience, and long-term sustainability.
